People Affected: Parents and their Children
As a parent
It is natural for a parent to be worried about the aural health of their child and the way their hobbies affect this.
The following tips should help ensure that your child is not doing permanent damage to their hearing when enjoying music:
- Use the volume limitation setting when giving an MP3 player to your child so they cannot pass a certain sound intensity limit.
- Give your child outer ear headphones instead of smaller, more damaging, inner ear headphones.
- Limit the amount of time that they spend using an MP3 player in a day. See our music lovers section for more information or try out our sound propagation application to learn more.
- If they are attending a concert or disco without you encourage them to stand at a reasonable distance away from the speakers.
- Encourage the use of earplugs when going to concerts and discos from an early age.
- You may find it helpful to use examples of celebrities and musicians who support healthy hearing in strengthening your case.
